International Self-Care Day falls on the 24th of July every year. The date itself carries a message: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, self care is not something you schedule around your life once in a while. It is meant to be part of every single day.
But for many people, that idea still feels distant. Life in Lagos, or anywhere fast paced, does not always leave room for it. Between work, family, traffic, and the pressure to keep up, self care can start to feel like something reserved for people with more time, more money, or fewer responsibilities than you.
That is a myth worth breaking today.
What Self Care Actually Means
Self-care is often pictured as candles, spa days, and vacations. Those things can be nice, but they are not what self-care is actually about. At its core, self-care simply means taking deliberate action to protect your physical, mental, and emotional health.
The World Health Organization describes self-care as the ability of individuals to promote their own health, prevent illness, and cope with sickness, with or without the support of a health worker. In simple terms, it is you showing up for your own wellbeing, consistently, not just when you finally break down.
Why This Day Matters
International Self-Care Day exists because too many people wait until a crisis before they pay attention to their mental health. Burnout, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion often build quietly over weeks and months. By the time it becomes obvious, it can feel much harder to recover from than it would have been to prevent.
This day is a reminder that healing does not have to start at rock bottom. It can start with a decision you make today, to check in with yourself honestly and respond to what you find.
Healing Starts With You: Where To Begin
You do not need a complete life overhaul to mark this day meaningfully. A few honest starting points can go a long way.
- Check in with yourself. Ask how you are really doing, not the polite answer you give people, the honest one.
- Notice what you have been ignoring. Poor sleep, constant fatigue, irritability, and withdrawing from people are often early signs your mind needs attention.
- Give yourself permission to rest. Rest is not something you earn after finishing everything on your list. It is part of the work.
- Reach out. Talk to a friend, a family member, or a professional. You are not meant to process everything alone.
- Make it a habit, not an event. One good day will not undo months of neglect. Consistency is what actually protects your mental health over time.
Self-Care Is Not Selfish
One of the biggest barriers to self-care is guilt. Many people were raised to believe that putting yourself first is selfish, especially when others depend on you. But you cannot consistently show up for the people around you from a place of exhaustion.
Caring for yourself is not the opposite of caring for others. It is what makes it sustainable.
When Self Care Is Not Enough
It is important to say this clearly: self-care is powerful, but it is not a replacement for professional support when you need it. If what you are feeling goes beyond everyday stress, if it lingers, deepens, or starts affecting how you function day to day, that is a sign to speak with a mental health professional.
Seeking help is itself an act of self-care, and one of the bravest ones.
A Simple Challenge For Today
This International Self-Care Day, do one honest thing for yourself. Rest without guilt. Say no to something that drains you. Reach out to someone you trust. Book that appointment you have been postponing. It does not need to be big. It only needs to be real.
Healing is rarely a single dramatic moment. More often, it is a series of small decisions to keep choosing yourself, again and again, until it becomes who you are.
At Nubi Wellness Center, we walk this journey with people every day, offering the professional care and support that self-care alone cannot always provide. If today is the day you decide to start, we are here for it.
