Mental Health Isn’t Just for Crisis Moments

| 3 Minutes Read

Most of us only bring up mental health when something has already gone wrong. A breakdown. A diagnosis. A crisis that forces the conversation into the open. But mental health isn’t only the emergency room version of itself. It’s also the ordinary Tuesday. The ability to get through a stressful week without unraveling. The ordinary discipline of rest, boundaries, and connection, practiced long before anything breaks.

At Nubi Wellness Center, we want to shift how our community thinks about mental wellness. Not as something you tend to only when you’re falling apart, but as something you maintain, the same way you maintain your body or your finances. This is what that looks like.

Why We Only Talk About It in Crisis

There’s a pattern many of us grew up with: mental health becomes a conversation only after something visible happens, a breakdown, a hospital visit, a loss. Outside of crisis, it’s rarely discussed. Culturally, many Nigerian households were raised on resilience language: “carry your cross,” “it is well,” “just pray about it.” These aren’t wrong on their own, but when they replace real attention to how we’re doing, they teach us to only notice our mental state once it has already collapsed.

The problem with waiting for a crisis is that by the time it arrives, the options have narrowed. Prevention becomes intervention. What could have been a conversation becomes an emergency.

What Mental Health Maintenance Actually Looks Like

Maintenance doesn’t require grand gestures. It looks like small, repeated choices that protect your mind the way exercise protects your body.

  • Rest before you’re forced to: You don’t have to earn rest by collapsing first. Sleep, quiet time, and slowing down are maintenance, not luxury.
  • Boundaries: Saying no to what drains you protects the energy you have for what matters.
  • Staying connected: Isolation quietly erodes mental health. Regular contact with people who care about you is protective, not optional.
  • Routine check-ins: You don’t need a crisis to talk to a therapist or counsellor. Regular check-ins catch small things before they grow.
  • Naming your emotions: Journaling, prayer, or simply naming how you feel out loud keeps you in touch with your own state before it becomes unmanageable.
  • Caring for your body: Movement, sunlight, water, and food are mental health tools, not just physical ones.

Signs Your Mental Health Needs Attention, Even Without a “Big” Trigger

You don’t need a diagnosable crisis to justify checking in with yourself. Pay attention if you notice:

  • A low-grade exhaustion that persists: even after rest, and it doesn’t lift.
  • A loss of motivation or enjoyment: Things that used to interest you, work, people, hobbies, feel flat.
  • Irritability that feels disproportionate: Feeling on edge, easily overwhelmed, or short-tempered without a clear reason.
  • Withdrawing socially without deciding to: Skipping calls, church, hangouts, or things you’d normally show up for.
  • Changes in sleep: Struggling to sleep, or sleeping far more than usual.
  • A persistent unease: An ongoing sense that something feels off, even if you can’t name it.

None of these require a crisis label to be worth attention. Catching them early is exactly the point of maintenance.

Small Habits That Build Resilience Before a Crisis

  • A weekly unplugged hour: Even ten minutes without your phone or a to-do list.
  • A support list: A short list of people you can be honest with, and who you actually reach out to.
  • A personal check-in ritual: A regular time each week to genuinely ask yourself how you’re doing, not just how things are going.
  • Professional support on a schedule: A therapist, counsellor, or trusted professional you see periodically, not only when things collapse.
  • Honest self-assessment: Recognising when “I’m managing” has quietly become “I’m struggling.”

Mental Health Care Doesn’t Start at the Breaking Point

If you wait until you’re in crisis to take your mental health seriously, you’re not doing anything wrong, many of us were never taught another way. But you don’t have to wait. Ordinary weeks deserve ordinary care too.

This week, we’re encouraging our community to treat mental health like maintenance. Rest before you’re forced to. Talk before it becomes urgent. Check in with yourself the way you’d check in with a friend.
